Staircase to the Moon

April - October

From April to October witness a breathtaking natural phenomenon known as Staircase to the Moon. It is caused by the rising of the full moon reflecting off the exposed mudflats at extremely low tide – creating a beautiful optical illusion of stairs reaching to the moon. Staircase to the Moon is a natural attraction and its visibility varies in strength depending on weather, sunset, moonrise and the tide. The best local vantage points are Cossack Lookout or Hearson Cove, near Karratha.

Brew and the Moo

November 2017

After its sell-out launch event in 2016, Brew and the Moo will be returning in November 2017 as the Pilbara’s premier beef and beer festival. Are you ready for a mouthwatering meat lovers feast? Brew and the Moo brings to you some of the best beef dishes our Pilbara chefs have to offer, all in one place. After the massive success this event brought in 2016, Wrapped Creations will be working even harder in 2017 to deliver all the beef that the Pilbara has to offer with pop-up food stalls, bringing you the best in beefy street food.

And beer lovers rejoice! As the exclusive North West event for WA Beer Week, patrons will not only be able to enjoy some of their favorite beers from award winning producers including Little Creatures and James Squire, there will also be an emphasis on promoting boutique beers that are not as commonly accessed in this remote Pilbara region. The music is the last piece of the Brew and the Moo puzzle, giving festival the perfect setting to sit back, relax and enjoy the great fl avours of the beer and beef provided.

Roebourne Races - 150th Anniversary

11 June, 24 June, 15 July, 29 July 2017

Punters have been watching the red dust fly at the Nor West Jockey Club’s Roebourne Races for nearly 150 years. Every year trainers and jockeys from WA’s best-known stables saddle up for some of the state’s most exciting track action north of Ascot. The four-race round kicks off with the Culture and Tourism Day in early June and finishes with the Roebourne Cup Day in late July.

Cossack Art Awards - 25th Anniversary

Each July the historic town of Cossack comes alive with the work of Hundreds of talented artists from across Australia for the country’s most unique regional art prize. The Cossack Art Award attracts thousands of visitors each year, its vibrant entries dress the walls of Cossack’s heritage listed Bond Store, Port and Telegraph Buildings, creating a captivating community and cultural canvas. The popular Cossack Family Day signals the start of the three-week public Exhibition period, public programme and Artist in Residence activities.

FeNaClNG Festival

5th - 6th August 2017

Each year thousands of people turn out over two days to celebrate life in the Shire of Roebourne. The FeNaClNG Festival’s unique name is derived from the commodities on which our community was built Iron Ore – Fe, Salt – NaCl and Natural Gas – NG. The action-packed program includes live entertainment; performances and demonstrations featuring local talent; art and craft pavilion; food stalls; retail opportunities and a sideshow alley.

REAF 2017

15th - 24th September 2017

The Red Earth Arts Festival is one of the largest of its kind. The Festival runs around the end of September and attracts more than 10,000 guests. The exciting program includes events held in each of the five towns within the City of Karratha including Karratha, Dampier, Roebourne, Wickham and Point Samson.

Turtle Nesting and Whale Watching

September - April / June - July

Beaches and islands along the Pilbara coast are important nesting sites for green, flatback, hawksbill and loggerhead turtles. Females come ashore to lay their eggs between September and April.

Humpback whales arrive between June and July each year to calve in the warm tropical waters in and around the Dampier Archipelago.
