A message from Peter Long

Welcome to the City of Karratha – home to Karratha, Dampier, Roebourne, Wickham, Point Samson and the historic settlement of Cossack.

We are the only city in the northern half of our State and our townships are becoming recognised for their outstanding lifestyle and career opportunities.

Recognised as the hub of the North West, our region is also becoming known for its exceptional tourism experiences and Council is working to grow the local tourism industry through our Karratha is Calling place branding campaign.

The year ahead will see us continue to provide high quality facilities and services, informed as always by community feedback from our annual community survey and various consultation activities.

Highlights in 2019-20 include the opening of the Wickham Community Hub, Welcome Park in the Karratha CBD and the refurbished historic Victoria Hotel in the Roebourne. The Victoria Hotel will feature a state-of-the-art cultural centre, Roebourne Library and visitor information services, all conveniently located together under the one roof. This year construction will also begin on a 4-star hotel in the centre of Karratha plus the extensive redevelopment of the Dampier Palms and Hampton Oval foreshore.

Our award-winning Red Earth Arts Precinct will host some high profile events this year, including the 2019 Developing Northern Australia Conference and the WA Regional Tourism Conference. Council is proud to actively pursue the conference market to fully utilise the arts precinct, in addition to it providing more entertainment options for our community. These conferences will stimulate our local economy and provide significant fl ow-on effects by generating interest in the investment potential, tourism appeal and liveability of our city.

Council will continue exploring options to diversify our local economy to create more employment and opportunities for our local business sector through our strong support for new sustainable initiatives such as green hydrogen and renewable energy, plus innovative agriculture and aquaculture projects.

It is an exciting time for the City of Karratha as we continue to work closely with our business community to expand our economic landscape.
