A message from Peter Long

Welcome to the City of Karratha, home to Dampier, Karratha, Roebourne, Cossack, Wickham and Point Samson. Recognised as the hub of the North West, our City is becoming known for its lifestyle opportunities and the year ahead will see us continue to provide facilities and support developments that meet the future needs of our community.

This begins with our recently opened Red Earth Arts Precinct, a brand new facility that provides incredible opportunity for growth in the arts and culture, conferencing and theatre performance spaces as well as improving our library, cinema and exhibition experiences for users. Fully utilising the precinct is a major priority for our team and residents and visitors can look forward to an exciting schedule of events over the next few years.

Flight services out of Karratha Airport will expand in the coming months to include a domestic leg to Brisbane and international leg to Singapore, connecting us with the East coast and providing a vital link through Asia to the rest of the
world. This brings with it opportunity for increased tourism and trade and Council will look to make the most of these avenues as we continue to grow our local economy.

The construction of the Wickham Community Hub will be complete at the end of the year providing Wickham residents with a new library, skate space, office space and a splash-pad. Our extensive foreshore improvement work at Point Samson will see a new viewing platform and eventually a jetty, while in Dampier the push for a marina continues alongside Stage 2 of our beachfront development works program.

This year, Council will focus on exploring options to diversify our local economy, creating more employment and business opportunities for local residents. Innovative ventures such as the Sahara Forest Project and Pilbara Rock Oyster Trial are strongly supported by Council and a number of complementary potential operations will be explored as these progress. It is an exciting time for the City of Karratha as we work closely with our business community
to expand our economic landscape.
